What is a domain transfer? How do I transfer a domain name?

A domain name transfer will change the company where your domain name is managed, and generally does not affect your website or email. Australian domain name transfers are free. You only pay domain name renewal, when your Australian domain name needs to be renewed. Global domain name transfers are also free but global domain names must be renewed for another year before they can be transferred.

Domain name transfer do not involve changing ownership of your domain. Most people transfer domains for better service, better price, or services like free domain  forwarding and DNS management or to have all their domains under one account.

Please do not let your domain name expire, thinking that you will be able to re-register it at another provider because not only will the domain go into an expiry or redemption period where email/web hosting becomes non functional but domains end up on drop lists, and may be registered by other parties, before you are able to re-register them.

Read domain name renewal for information about what happens when domain name expires because it may not be a straightforward process of registering it again and many domains are snapped up by domainers and cyber squatters.

You are only able to transfer in,

  • Global domain names (.com, .net, .biz, .org, .info)
  • Australian domain names
  • New Zealand domain names
  • UK domains

Please read the instructions below to transfer your domain.

Free Domain Transfer

There is no charge to transfer a domain name and global domain names need only to be renewed for an additional year, in order to be transferred to us.

How to transfer an Australian domain name

  1. Click here to recover your domain name password. An automated email will be sent to the registrant email address and this will contain your domain name password. If you no longer have access to the registrant email address, you need to contact or login to your current registrar and get your email address updated  before you initiate the domain name transfer. Please do not skip this step, because some registrars put their own email address as the registrant email address and by using the form to recover your domain name password, it will also tell you the registrant email address for that domain name.
  2. Once you have your domain name password and access to the registrant email address for your domain name, you can Click here to initiate domain name transfer . You need to fill in your domain name, agree to the terms and conditions and paste your domain name password and then complete the form. If you have bought a domain from us before, you do not need to fill in your personal details again, simply log in with your username and password.
  3. You will then receive an email confirming your transfer request. The registrant will also receive an email asking them to agree to the domain name transfer and the instructions in the automated email followed. The system will detect that the authorization has occurred and within 48 hours, the domain name will be transferred to us. If for some reason, you do not receive an email asking you to confirm your transfer request, then please contact us, so that we can find out why and have the email resent. (Please check your junk mail ). Alternatively, we can send you a domain name transfer authorization form and you can authorize a transfer by filling in and emailing (or posting) a transfer authorization form if you are unable to use the online transfer form.

How to transfer a global domain name

Global domain names have a rule that if you have bought or renewed a domain name recently, you are unable to transfer out until a period of 60 days has elapsed. Do not attempt to transfer in a domain name, if you have recently renewed or bought a global domain name, ie .com, .net , .org , info domain name because the system will reject your application.

  • Step 1: Check the whois database for the registrar status. If it says, "clientTransferProhibited, clientUpdateProhibited" then you need to login to your current registrar and unlock the domain or have it unlocked.
  • Step 2: Login to current registrar

To transfer your domain, you will need to retrieve your domain name password and check the status of your domain name.  Different registrars call the domain password by different names. eg registry key, authorization code, but most will have the key displayed when you login. If your domain name status is "registrar lock" you will need to unlock your domain before you will be able to transfer your domain. If you have problems finding your registry key, email your current registrar, who must follow ICANN rules and send the registry key to you in 5 days. (Some registrars can be particularly frustrating and will deliberately make it difficult for you to transfer out your domain. Most registrars have systems that will email out to the registrant an auth code with a push of a button, so persist and they will send it to you) Please check that the registrant email address is correct and domain name status is unlocked.

Note: The registry key or domain password is different from the password that you will use to login to your online domain name management. Usually, you can easily retrieve the login password by entering your domain in the "forgot password" field and your login password will be sent to the registrant's email address. You can then login and find your domain password.

You will need to fill in your domain name, domain name password, read and agree to terms and conditions and fill in your details. If you have bought a domain from us before, you do not need to fill in your personal details again, simply log in with your username and password.  You will need to pay for domain name renewal to complete the transfer request. You will receive an email confirming your transfer request.

  • Step 4: Authorize Transfer

After you complete the domain name transfer form, the registrant (in most cases the registrant will be you) will receive an email. asking to confirm the transfer. If for some reason, you do not receive an email asking you to confirm your transfer request, then please contact us, so that we can find out why and have the email resent to you. When you complete this form, the transfer will be authorized and usually within 7 days, your domain will be transferred in.

It may seem like you are authorizing the transfer twice because you enter the registry key twice, but unless you both initiate the transfer using the registry key and authorize the transfer, your domain name will not be transferred.

Once your domain name has been transferred in, you will receive email notification. This usually takes 7 days for global domain names.

How to transfer a New Zealand domain name

  1. Go to your current registrar and find out your UDAI or Unique Domain Authentication Identifier.

If you have bought a domain from us before, you do not need to fill in your personal details again, simply log in with your username and password. You will receive a confirmation email about your transfer request.
  3. The registrant will also receive an email confirming your transfer request. If for some reason, you do not receive an email asking you to confirm your transfer request, then please contact us, so that we can find out why. Please follow the instructions in the email to complete the transfer.

How to transfer a UK domain name

.uk domains are non transferrable using the normal transfer form.  A .uk transfer is known as a 'Retag' or 'Tag Change'.

You will need to contact your existing registrar and request that they change your IPS-TAG to PLANETDOMAIN-AU. This can usually only be completed by the registrar.
Then please contact us and we will request the record be added. We will then confirm that the domain name has been pushed to PLANETDOMAIN-AU, we will create a record in our system.

If your registrar does not want to retag the uk domain for you, you need to use the .uk registry's online 'change agent' process. Visit the UK registry and follow the online instructions to retag your domain name to 'PLANETDOMAIN-AU'.

Once your domain has been retagged you need to email us, so that a login access is given to your uk domain name. If you are an existing customer, please let us know your username, so we can put all your domains in the same account.

Frequently Asked Questions
